IGN recently spoke to Bioshock developer Ken Levine about his new game Judas and his thoughts on the ever-changing world of game development.
Ken Levine shared his perspective on why cutting-edge technology and ultrarealism do not appeal to him as a creator. He emphasized that focusing on the latest technology isn't a priority for him, highlighting that games like BioShock have aged well due to their stylized approach rather than aiming for ultrarealism. Levine also mentioned that with the advancements in gaming machines like the Nintendo Switch 2 and the upcoming Steam Machine, the industry may be reaching a point of diminishing returns in the pursuit of better visuals.
Levine stressed the importance of having the right art direction and approach, stating that being on the cutting edge of technology is not always necessary. He discussed the narrative elements in Judas and Baldur's Gate, noting that while they require a significant amount of work, they are not overly demanding in terms of technology. Judas, Levine's upcoming first-person shooter, is set to be released on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X and S, although no specific launch date has been announced yet.
Ken Levine's insights were shared as part of IGN's Icons series, which commemorates the contributions of key figures in the video game industry over the past three decades.
