Insights into Stranger Than Heaven from Xbox Presents Showcase

RGG Studio has revealed details about its upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven, during the Xbox Presents Showcase. The game, previously known as Project Century, takes players on a journey through decades, offering a unique experience distinct from the Yakuza series.

RGG Studio unveiled Stranger Than Heaven, previously codenamed Project Century, during The Game Awards in 2024. The game was reintroduced last summer under its final title. Teaming up with Xbox, the studio presented a 30-minute showcase delving into the intricacies of the game, showcasing new gameplay footage. Unlike the Yakuza franchise, Stranger Than Heaven spans 50 years, starting in 1915 with protagonist Makoto Daito escaping to Japan after a tumultuous event in San Francisco.

As the narrative unfolds, Makoto encounters Orpheus, a cunning smuggler portrayed by Snoop Dogg, leading him into a life of crime and ambition in Japan. The evolving world mirrors Makoto's journey, with shifting cities and new activities based on the era. The game features a layered world with both legitimate businesses and a perilous criminal underworld to explore.

Stranger Than Heaven introduces a revamped combat system, emphasizing strategic gameplay over button-mashing. Players control specific limbs with dedicated buttons, enhancing the depth of combat. The game also offers a wide array of melee weapons and potentially firearms, adding versatility to combat scenarios. In a unique twist, Makoto can collect sounds worldwide to create original compositions, manage a band, and collaborate with various musicians, such as Tori Kelly.

The game is set for a winter 2026 release on Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will have access to Stranger Than Heaven on launch day.
