RGG Studio, known for its Yakuza and Like a Dragon games, is revolutionizing its combat mechanics with Stranger Than Heaven. This new game, showcased at Summer Game Fest, delves into 50 years of Japan's history across five distinct periods. While Yakuza titles typically offer arcade-style beat-'em-up action, Stranger Than Heaven requires strategic thinking for every move.
The combat system in Stranger Than Heaven involves controlling each side of the character separately. Players use specific buttons for the left and right sides to execute attacks and parries. This innovative approach allows for seamless attack combinations, enemy parrying, and stunning maneuvers before delivering decisive blows.
Aside from fistfights, players can wield weapons to balance the odds in outnumbered scenarios. RGG Studio aims to enhance the action-packed experience and deliver a more grounded combat feel compared to its previous games. Stranger Than Heaven is set to launch on January 15, 2027, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, featuring a star-studded cast including Snoop Dogg, Bunta Sugawara, and Tupac Shakur.
