id Software Addresses Layoffs After Xbox Restructuring

id Software has issued a statement following layoffs at Xbox that saw roughly half the staff at the legendary first-person shooter studio lose their jobs. id Software assured fans that it is currently at a similar staffing level to when it created the acclaimed Doom reboot in 2016 and remains capable of producing high-quality games.

id Software responded to the recent layoffs at Xbox, where approximately half of the first-person shooter studio's employees were let go. The layoffs were part of a broader restructuring by new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, affecting a significant number of Microsoft's gaming division. Despite concerns about its ability to lead new game development, id Software assured fans that it is currently at a similar staffing level to when it created the acclaimed Doom reboot in 2016 and remains capable of producing high-quality games.

The studio emphasized its commitment to supporting affected team members and continuing its legacy of developing innovative games and technology. While no specific projects have been announced, id Software is reportedly exploring various game ideas, including a John Wick-style IP, a new Perfect Dark installment, and a multiplayer/co-op Doom game. The studio's collaboration with other Bethesda studios is expected to strengthen, with a renewed focus on major franchises like Halo, Minecraft, Candy Crush, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls.

Industry veterans John Romero and John Carmack also shared their perspectives on the situation, with Romero expressing support for affected staff and highlighting the importance of preserving the studio's iconic game series. Carmack, on the other hand, reflected on the studio's sales performance in light of the layoffs. The restructuring at Xbox and Bethesda aims to prioritize key franchises and ensure sustainable growth for the future.
