Lord of the Rings actor Ian McKellen expresses surprise at the production of new Middle-earth films, including his return as Gandalf in The Hunt for Gollum.
McKellen shared his astonishment at the idea of expanding the Lord of the Rings universe, crediting Andy Serkis for identifying the prequel storyline. Serkis will direct and star in the film. The Hunt for Gollum will delve into the period before the Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on characters searching for the One Ring. The movie will feature familiar faces like Gandalf and Aragorn, while being pursued by Sauron.
The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, co-written by Stephen Colbert, is also in production. While details are scarce, the film will explore chapters from the Fellowship of the Ring not included in Peter Jackson's adaptation. The storyline will include characters like Sam, Merry, and Pippin reflecting on past events.
Despite some waning fan interest after the Hobbit trilogy, the Middle-earth franchise remains popular and profitable. The Hunt for Gollum is set for release on 17 December 2027, with McKellen reprising his role as Gandalf.
