Hasbro Focuses on Fewer, Bigger Video Games Strategy After $56 Million

Hasbro's ambitious plan to expand into video games appears to have hit an expensive snag, as the company has recorded a $56 million impairment charge related to its video games portfolio for 2028 and beyond, according to its second-quarter earnings results.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks stated that the company canceled several games scheduled for release in 2028 and beyond, leading to the $56 million non-cash write-down. The focus going forward will be on trading card games, role-playing games, cost discipline, ownable platforms, and partnerships. While some projects were cut, games like Exodus and Warlock are still set for 2027 release.

Despite recent cancellations and layoffs, Hasbro remains committed to building durable digital franchises around Magic, D&D, and other high-conviction titles. The company's strategy involves concentrating investments where it sees the best potential for success and revenue generation.

Hasbro's digital gaming division has undergone significant changes over the years, with investments in various studios and projects. While some titles were scrapped, the company continues to work on promising games like the Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure title developed by Giant Skull.
