Grim Forecast for Xbox's Console Future

Next year could be a grim one for Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, as console sales are expected to dramatically decline in 2027 by almost 20%.

According to a report from S&P Global Market Intelligence Kagan, console sales are predicted to drop by almost 20% in 2027 due to component shortages. This has led to an increase in prices for consoles like the Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, contrary to the usual trend of prices dropping over time. The report forecasts that console shipments will decrease to around 27.1 million units by 2027 but could recover to 37.4 million units by 2030 if the component crisis stabilizes by 2028.

S&P Global Market Intelligence analyst Neil Barbour projects that Sony and Microsoft could release their next-gen consoles, the PS6 and Project Helix, priced between $600 and $800 each. However, the current market faces challenges with outdated or expensive hardware, a limited software lineup, and economic conditions that prevent significant price reductions.
