The Wheel of Time series, known for its bestselling fantasy novels, is venturing into the world of tabletop gaming with the upcoming board game War of the Dragon. This strategic game, designed for 2-4 players, integrates tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics to create an engaging experience of conquest and survival. Launched on Kickstarter with a funding target of $50,000, War of the Dragon quickly gained traction, exceeding $300,000 in pledges within a short period.
While The Wheel of Time has previously been adapted into a tabletop role-playing game by Wizards of the Coast, War of the Dragon marks the franchise's first official venture into board gaming. The game offers players a comprehensive gaming experience with new illustrations, miniatures, and diverse game modes. The project's success on Kickstarter can be attributed to the involvement of Dire Wolf, a renowned publisher with a track record of producing exceptional board games like Dune: Imperium and Clank!. Dune: Imperium, a deck-building board game by Dire Wolf, has received high praise, earning a remarkable 9 out of 10 rating from IGN reviewers.
Aside from the board game adaptation, The Wheel of Time series is undergoing a resurgence in various media formats, including the development of an animated series and a video game. Although specific release dates for these projects are yet to be announced, War of the Dragon is expected to launch around June 2027.
