Born in May 1958, Russell began his directing career with the 1987 film A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, followed by The Blob remake in 1988. He later collaborated with Jim Carrey on the popular '90s movie The Mask in 1994. Throughout his career, he worked on various projects, including Eraser (1996), Bless the Child (2000), and The Scorpion King (2002) featuring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.
In the 2010s, Russell's directing pace slowed down, with projects like Fringe (2010) and I Am Wrath (2016). His final directorial works included Junglee (2019), Paradise City (2022), and Witchboard (2024). The Mask, one of his notable films, received an Oscar nomination in 1995.
