The director, Michael Sarnoski, has turned in a second draft of the script and aims to film the movie next year in Iceland and Northern Ireland. The movie is expected to be an original story within Hideo Kojima's universe, featuring some overlapping characters from the games. Sarnoski expressed his desire for the film to feel grand yet character-focused, with a unique set of characters.
Details about the movie's timeline in relation to the games or the specific characters to appear remain unknown. Norman Reedus has shown interest in reprising his role, and other familiar faces like Lea Seydoux and Troy Baker could potentially make appearances. A24 will produce the film in collaboration with Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, with Kojima playing a significant role in its production.
While Kojima has ideas for a third Death Stranding game, he is not planning to develop it himself. The franchise will expand into other media formats, including an animated TV series and an anime film. Kojima is currently working on two other games: OD, an episodic horror game, and Physint, a return to tactical espionage action expected to be a PlayStation 6 title.
