Dead by Daylight has evolved significantly over its 10-year history, with a noticeable shift towards more graphic depictions of violence. According to the game's creative director, Dave Richard, this deliberate change is influenced by the growing interest in horror within pop culture. Initially aiming for accessibility, the development team avoided extreme content to appeal to a broader audience. However, as societal desensitization to horror themes increased, the game gradually intensified its violent elements, particularly evident in the evolution of 'moris' kill animations.
Richard highlighted the current cultural celebration and interaction with horror compared to previous decades, emphasizing the positive reception of heightened violence in Dead by Daylight. This strategic shift aligns with Behaviour's future plans for the game, including upcoming collaborations like the one with the Terrifier franchise, known for its intense portrayal of violence.
