Civilization 7 Undergoes Major Changes with Test of Time Update

Firaxis Games and 2K released the highly anticipated Test of Time update for Sid Meier's Civilization VII today, May 19.

Firaxis Games and 2K have launched the Test of Time update for Sid Meier's Civilization VII on May 19, marking the most significant update since the game's release in February. This update introduces substantial changes to the game's mechanics and victory conditions, altering the way players engage with Civilization 7. One notable adjustment is the introduction of 'Time-Tested Civs,' allowing players to maintain a civilization throughout different ages, contrary to the initial system where players selected a new civilization with each era.

Moreover, the Legacy Path system has been replaced in this update, affecting the way victories are achieved. Instead of following specific paths like cultural, military, scientific, or economic, players now need to complete Triumphs across six attributes to progress. This change offers players more flexibility in pursuing different goals and decouples victories from the Triumphs system, enabling early military, cultural, economic, and scientific victories depending on the player's progress compared to opponents.

The addition of Time-Tested Civs, Triumphs, and revised victory conditions represents a fundamental shift in Civilization VII's gameplay, likely appealing to fans of the series' earlier titles who were critical of the game's initial changes. The update also includes new features such as the introduction of Alexander the Great as a leader, the Fractal Continent map, dedicated Commerce and Advisor Council screens, as well as improvements to game balance, map generation, and narrative events. With these enhancements, now is an ideal time for both new players and returning fans to experience Civilization VII, available on various platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Apple Arcade for mobile.
