The future of Bungie is looking uncertain, as insider reports claim layoffs are on the way for the studio as it ends development on Destiny 2.
Insider reports suggest that Bungie is set to experience significant layoffs as it concludes work on Destiny 2, with no plans in place for Destiny 3. Instead, the studio is shifting its focus to Marathon. Despite expectations for a Destiny 3 project, sources indicate that the Destiny 2 team currently lacks a new development assignment. While Bungie employees are proposing various projects, including Destiny-related titles, none have received approval for production. With Bungie's parent company Sony emphasizing cost-efficiency due to escalating hardware prices and market competition, the fate of these new ventures remains uncertain.
Sony's acquisition of Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022 has been followed by a $769 million write-off of the studio's value. Since the acquisition, Bungie has downsized significantly, abandoning peripheral projects to concentrate on Marathon and Destiny 2. According to journalist Jason Schreier, concerns over expenses delayed the commencement of Destiny 3 post The Final Shape release. A proposed Destiny spin-off named Payback, internally dubbed as "the next Destiny," was also scrapped post Sony's acquisition of Bungie.
Currently, Bungie is directing its efforts towards Marathon, an extraction shooter that has underperformed since its March launch. Some members of the Destiny 2 team have recently transitioned to work on Marathon.
