Remasters are good business for video game companies, but don't expect to see BioWare's Dragon Age games getting the same treatment in the future--or possibly, ever.
Mark Darrah, former producer of the Dragon Age series, mentioned that due to BioWare losing significant institutional knowledge, the original trilogy of games is unlikely to be remastered. Plans for a 'Champion Edition' remaster, including Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, and Dragon Age: Inquisition, were in place. However, the specialized knowledge required for remastering games running on the Aurora engine is no longer available at BioWare.
Darrah explained that unlike Mass Effect, which is based on the Unreal Engine, there are very few companies that could assist with the Aurora Engine. While a Dragon Age trilogy remaster is not entirely impossible, Darrah doubts that EA, in its current state, would allocate resources to form a new team for such a project.
Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider also expressed concerns about the franchise's future, suggesting it may be in jeopardy following the underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This led to significant layoffs at BioWare, leaving only a core team to focus on the next Mass Effect installment. Additionally, EA is undergoing a transition to become a private company through a multi-billion dollar buyout, potentially resulting in the sale of studios like BioWare.
