Avoid Overpriced Steam Deck and Consider Alternatives

The Steam Deck, despite being out of stock, is still one of the best handheld gaming PCs on the market. However, prices have surged, making it unwise to pay the inflated costs.

The Steam Deck has been unavailable for purchase for several months, with uncertainty surrounding when Valve will restock. While there is speculation that the recent 'game console' shipments could include handhelds, Valve might opt to wait for the release of the Steam Deck 2 before replenishing stock, especially given the proximity of the Steam Machine launch.

Although the Steam Deck remains a highly sought-after device, the escalating prices present a deterrent. Currently, acquiring a new Steam Deck from Amazon demands around $1,110 for the 512GB OLED variant, double the original price. Instead of succumbing to these exorbitant costs, consumers are advised to explore alternatives such as the Lenovo Legion Go S or the Xbox Ally X, which offer similar pricing but boast superior features like enhanced display quality, improved performance, and increased storage capacity.

Even those seeking a Steam Deck alternative within a comparable price range may find the Xbox Ally a viable option, providing similar performance levels alongside a more ergonomic design. Despite the necessity of using Windows 11, the Xbox Full Screen Experience enhances the overall user experience. Interestingly, the initial comparison between the Xbox Ally and the Steam Deck favored Valve's product due to its superior value proposition. This scenario underscores how supply shortages can significantly impact market dynamics.

While obtaining a Steam Deck at a reasonable cost remains feasible through platforms like eBay, buyers may still face prices close to or exceeding the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for a pre-owned device, with no assurance of its functionality.

The current scarcity of the Steam Deck is regrettable, considering its popularity as a portable gaming PC that has captivated enthusiasts. Despite previously advocating for the Steam Deck as an affordable entry point to PC gaming, the prevailing circumstances now urge consumers to explore alternative handheld options until the potential release of the Steam Deck 2 restores accessibility and affordability.
