Assassin’s Creed Heading to Ancient Rome on Netflix

As much as I like Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, I cannot help but think the recently announced Resynced remake is a sign that the franchise is struggling to stay afloat, forever incapable of living up to the quality and cultural relevance of its first fistful of games.

Black Flag was, arguably, the franchise’s last big win – the last to be beloved by nearly everyone, the last to still feel like a genuine event. Ubisoft might eventually need to create an original game that captures the magic of the Ezio era. The idea of a game set in ancient Rome, inspired by Netflix’s upcoming TV show, could be a fresh direction for the series.

The show, set in 64 AD during Nero’s rule, could provide a rich backdrop for a game, exploring the Great Fire of Rome and the conspiracies surrounding it. A game set in ancient Rome would offer Ubisoft a chance to bring the city to life in ways not seen before, showcasing Nero’s architectural projects and the political intrigue of the time.

With the potential for an Assassin-Templar conflict against the backdrop of Nero’s reign, a game in this setting could challenge players to reconsider their perceptions of historical figures like Nero, known for his controversial actions and the myths surrounding his rule.
