AMD's Strategy to Extend Support for Older Hardware

With the growing cost of PC hardware and no defined end in sight, AMD is leveraging older hardware and promising extended support of existing platforms as its business strategy for the foreseeable future.

AMD made several announcements at Computex, focusing on bringing back the popular 5800X3D AE CPU on June 25 for $350. This AM4 chip, initially released in 2022, was the first to introduce AMD's 3D V-Cache memory technology, enhancing gaming performance significantly. The re-release aims to provide gamers on older AM4 platforms an upgrade path without needing a full system replacement, taking advantage of the lower prices of DDR4 memory as DDR5 gains traction in the AI sector.

For those transitioning to AMD's latest AM5 platform or planning to do so, the new 7700X3D offers an affordable entry point to 3D V-Cache CPU power, priced at $330 and set to launch on July 16. With similar core and thread counts as the 7800X3D but slightly lower clock speeds, the 7700X3D presents a viable option for most gaming scenarios. AMD's commitment to supporting AM5 until 2029 indicates a prolonged platform lifespan, following the unexpectedly long tenure of AM4, further extended by the return of the 5800X3D. The absence of any mention of a new platform like AM6 at Computex suggests that AMD may have more to unveil at CES next year.
