Amazon has decided to withdraw from the biopic about Sam Altman, titled Artificial, despite it being almost finished. The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, features a star-studded cast including Andrew Garfield, Ike Barinholtz, and Monica Barbaro. This move comes shortly after Amazon's $50 billion investment commitment to OpenAI earlier this year.
The decision to part ways with the project was made by Prime Video head Mike Hopkins. Amazon is now collaborating with the Artificial team to secure a new distributor for the film, believing it would be better suited under a different studio. The movie's storyline revolves around the period when Altman faced termination and subsequent rehiring at OpenAI in 2023.
Despite positive reactions from test audiences, particularly towards the portrayals of Altman and Elon Musk, Amazon opted to discontinue its involvement. The film, known for its critical depiction of the two tech figures, is currently seeking a new home for its release after Amazon's exit. Originally slated for a 2023 release, Artificial now faces uncertainty regarding its premiere date.
