A24 Addresses Copyright Strikes on Backrooms Fan Art After Director

A24 has issued a statement clarifying the numerous takedown notices filed on behalf of its brand after Backrooms director Kane Parsons promised he’d investigate.

A24 published their statement via Instagram on July 17, just two days after Parsons responded to a Reddit post from a user claiming their wallpaper pattern had been pulled from Redbubble over copyright infringement. The statement emphasized that Backrooms is part of a larger creative ecosystem, supporting artists' rights to interpret the story. A24 clarified that they do not claim ownership of the yellow wallpaper or related community works.

Following automated copyright claims, fans of Backrooms experienced restrictions on various works. An indie developer reported their game inspired by Backrooms was removed from Google Play, and Redbubble took down artwork of liminal office spaces on behalf of A24 LLC. Parsons, addressing the issue on Reddit and Discord, attributed the takedown notices to internal confusion and third-party errors.

Parsons reassured the community that A24 prioritizes protecting creators and does not engage in copyright aggression. Despite the setbacks, Parsons' Backrooms film was a commercial success, grossing $375 million against a $10 million budget. IGN praised the film for its visuals, characterization, and incorporation of Backrooms lore.
